Under UK law, complementary practitioners are unable to mention benefits in relation to medical conditions that may be assisted by complementary therapies, unless certain so-called scientific criteria have been met in terms of research. Yes, it is good that we do not say we cure or diagnose and I never have said this as this could give false hope or stop people taking essential medication/seeking medical advice. However, under the ASA code it is unlikely that we will ever be able to cite evidence, given there is very little funding for research and that many of us work from a different philosophy than the allopathic one. Also, the ASA code only allows for double-blind studies.* Even when studies have established success, the mainstream industries have, through legislation, sought to suppress the benefits of many therapies including herbalism (as you cannot patent a dandelion or nettle), touch in massage, shiatsu, reflexology, Alexander technique and so on. Until recently Shiatsu and Alexander Technique research that was monitored by the medical profession showed that back pain had better outcomes from complementary therapy practitioners of these modalities plus clinical massage has studies backing it from the USA in pain management. Good science to me always meant curiosity and cannot work under one type of research model. Under this legislation complementary therapies and practitioners are being censored by vested interests who are unwilling to accept evidence from other countries, using non-double blind studies and so on.
* A double blind study means that the client does not know but the practitioner isn’t able to either! In massage for instance this would be impossible as I would always know whether I was giving a massage or a placebo. The same is not applied to surgeons for instance so why the ASA regards these standards as the only applicable one to complementary therapies I don’t know! Perhaps what is of interest is how an un-elected quango has so much power when they are not a Government-body and when there is a perception that they may seem to have vested interests that tie them to certain corporations and industries that they effectively allow to word misinformation to consumers.... However, I will leave that to others.
